Enton's Coppice

Also known as, or recorded in historical documents as;
Ewekene's Copse

In the civil parish of Capel.
In the historic county of Surrey.
Modern Authority of Surrey.
1974 county of Surrey.
Medieval County of Surrey.

OS Map Grid Reference: TQ172413
Latitude 51.15896° Longitude -0.32539°

Enton's Coppice has been described as a Timber Castle but is rejected as such.

There are earthwork remains.

Description

A small fosse, "the site of the ancient castle of the Entons", is in Enton's Coppice about 1/4 mile west of Capel Street. O.S. 1" 1806-10 names Ewekene's Farm as Ewtons's Farm, therefore Ewekene's Copse is probably Enton's Coppice as it is the required distance from Capel Street. (PastScape ref. Brayley)

A perambulation of Ewekene's Copse revealed nothing more than a complex of woodland boundary banks and ditches. A trench cut the length of the copse by S.E. Electricity Board engineers revealed nothing of interest (F1 ASP 19-NOV-65). (PastScape)

A complex of boundary banks and ditches in Enton's Coppice, near Capel Street (alleged Castle earthwork). (SHHER)
Comments

Clearly not a castle site. Enton is place in Surrey but not apparently a family name.

Most of the sites or buildings recorded in this web site are NOT open to the public and permission to visit a site must always be sought from the landowner or tenant.
It is an offence to disturb a Scheduled Monument without consent. It is a destruction of everyone's heritage to remove archaeological evidence from ANY site without proper recording and reporting.

Minor archaeological investigations, such as watching brief reports, and some other 'grey' literature is most likely to be held by H.E.R.s but is often poorly referenced and is unlikely to be recorded here, or elsewhere, but some suggestions can be found here.
The possible site or monument is represented on maps as a point location. This is a guide only. It should be noted that OS grid references defines an area, not a point location. In practice this means the actual center of the site or monument may often, but not always, be to the North East of the point shown. Locations derived from OS grid references and from latitude longitiude may differ by a small distance.
Further information on mapping and location can be seen at this link.
